Sorolla: A Celebration of Life

Sorolla: A Celebration of Life

30 May 2024 — 19 June 2024

We are delighted to announce the opening of the latest and final edition of our touring exhibition Sorolla: A Celebration of Life. Featuring a selection of paintings not previously exhibited, we look forward to welcoming visitors to our Madrid gallery. We would also like to extend our warmest thanks to everyone who visited the exhibition in London and New York.

Alongside John Singer Sargent and Giovanni Boldini, Joaquín Sorolla was among the most celebrated painters of his era, and his work remains fundamental to understanding fin-de-siècle European art.

Drawn from private collections, the artworks presented in Sorolla: A Celebration of Life encompass many of the artist’s most characteristic themes, including social realism, insightful portraiture, and luminous en plein air scenes, such as sun-dappled Valencian terraces. Central to the exhibition is the sea, a recurring and vital protagonist throughout Sorolla’s oeuvre. Rendered with vibrant and fluid brushwork, the artist’s seascapes convey the crashing of waves and swirling foam as they lap around joyful bathers, capturing both movement and light with extraordinary immediacy.
