Colnaghi London and Artuner are delighted to announce Love at the Source, a group exhibition staged at Colnaghi London from 16 May to 14 June 2024.
Reflecting on the fluidity of our times, Love at the Source contemplates the figurative logic of Old Master paintings alongside the more intuitive approaches often found in Modern and Contemporary art. The exhibition borrows its title from the eponymous painting by Francesco Boneri, known as Cecco del Caravaggio, which serves as the focal point from which centuries of carefully curated works radiate in a scintillating dialogue between old and new.
Alongside established figures such as Claude Lorrain, Henri Matisse, and Luis Meléndez, the exhibition featured a range of diverse emerging talents. German painter Pia Krajewski reinterprets the still-life genre through a haptic and intuitive treatment of the canvas, capturing life in a continuous state of evolution. David Czupryn depicts surreal encounters, incorporating art historical and mythological references through a layered technique reminiscent of the Old Masters.
Marcus Cope explores memory and identity through metaphorical painting, while Manuele Cerutti investigates the perception of identity by pushing the boundaries of portraiture and experimentation. Paul Kneale reflects on the world’s transition into a digital language that simplifies, trivialises, and depersonalises communication, contextualising these ideas through mixed media practices.
Love at the Source ultimately sought to investigate how a collection can expand the boundaries of curatorial criticism by dismantling conventional stereotypes and challenging assumptions surrounding both Old Master and Contemporary art, disproving the notion that the two genres are inherently incompatible.
