The Great Sphinx of Giza is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt, carved out of the limestone bedrock of the Giza plateau. This monumental figure was created during the Old Kingdom in the reign of Khufu, whose Great Pyramid can be seen in the background of this photograph. The Sphinx is shown here as it would have appeared around 1885 by which time some of the sand had been removed from around the great sculpture.
